Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can a stone benchtop panel sit behind a gas cooktop as a splashback?

Yes, but check the slab’s heat rating and the clearance from the burner to the wall. Porcelain panels usually suit high heat and open flame zones. Natural stone varies by species and finish. Mineral stone brands set strict rules near heat.

Keep minimum clearances as per your cooktop manual, add a non-combustible spacer if needed and avoid direct pan contact with the panel.

Ask for mitred returns or a small ledge to manage splatter. Seal natural stone to reduce oil staining and use neutral-cure silicone at edges that face steam.

  • Which edge profile chips least on stone benchtops?

Small-radius pencil round edges last well in family kitchens. A 3–5 mm radius softens the top and bottom arrises so knocks from pans or lunchboxes mark less.

Sharknose looks sleek on modern cabinetry but the thin lip can chip if it gets hit. Mitred build-ups create a thick look but still need a soft radius at the meeting line.

For laundries and kids’ bathrooms, a full pencil round or slight bullnose handles bumps better than a sharp square.

  • How are cut-outs for sinks and cooktops kept strong in stone?

Strong cut-outs start with generous corner radii rather than sharp square corners. Leave solid rails between openings and edges, ideally 70–100 mm where space allows.

Undermount sinks need smooth polishing inside the cut-out to avoid stress points. Heavy farmhouse sinks work best on cradle supports, not just the stone. Flushmount or integrated drainers in mineral stone or porcelain need accurate templating and slow, cooled cutting to prevent micro-cracks.

Natural stone near taps benefits from a soft radius around the tap hole and periodic sealing to resist hairline edge marks.

  • How skilled is the team working on my stone job?

Our team has years of hands-on experience shaping, cutting and installing stone. They understand each stone’s natural structure, and use the right tools and techniques to cut, smooth and install surfaces that look great and last.

  • Why choose stone masonry over standard benchtop materials?

Stone masonry with natural stone brings unique character to your project. You get natural variation in grain and colour, strength that stands up to heat and heavy use, and a finish that feels substantial and timeless — ideal for homes and commercial spaces alike.
